Amapiano vocalist Babalwa M has spoken out following the backlash that erupted after she did not perform at the Itsoseng Delicious event on the Day of Goodwill.
In a detailed statement shared on social media, the singer addressed rumours surrounding her withdrawal, making it clear that the decision had nothing to do with performance riders, alcohol, or special demands.
“I’ve performed at many shows where riders were incorrect or completely absent,” Babalwa M explained. “What matters to me is how the engagement is handled and whether there is mutual respect.”
The artist revealed that the situation took a negative turn after she allegedly experienced verbal abuse from one of the event promoters, who reportedly insulted her during a disagreement.
“At that point, it was no longer a professional or safe space to continue,” she said.
She also corrected claims circulating online, stating that she had already agreed to a reduced performance fee and that an extra bottle of alcohol mentioned by organisers was not supplied by them, but by her DJ’s friend.
Beyond that, Babalwa M pointed out that basic hospitality standards were not met, including the absence of drinking water for her and her team.
“For me, respect is not optional,” she shared. “I wouldn’t accept poor treatment in any other professional setting, and performing is no different.”
To further demonstrate good faith, the singer confirmed that she refunded the organisers in full before leaving the venue, stressing that her actions were not driven by entitlement or ego.
She described the incident as a rare occurrence in her career and offered a heartfelt apology to fans who had come out to support her.
“I’m truly sorry to everyone who attended expecting to see me perform,” Babalwa M said, adding that the situation highlights the ongoing need for respect, professionalism, and accountability in the music industry.
